To Potential Participants:
Data indicates older adults' healthcare costs average about 3 times greater than those of the typical working adult. With decreasing time providers have to spend with patients, adding wearable activity monitors (such as an Apple Watch or Fitbit) into the healthcare setting may be used to improve clinical care. Therefore, we believe it is especially important to first receive feedback from you on preferences for adding wearable devices into your healthcare. The purpose of the current research study is to develop strategies to include wearable devices into healthcare to remotely monitor health.
To participate, we are looking for people who are age 65 years or older and have one of the following conditions: a) Cardiometabolic disease b) Neurological disorder c) Cancer. The survey will be in English so being comfortable with reading and understanding English is required to complete the survey.
If you agree to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete a survey asking questions about your health history, current health care, previous experiences with wearable technology, and feedback on the addition of wearable technology into your clinic visits. The survey will take about 30 minutes to complete. If you are unable to complete the survey at a single time, we will email you a link to your survey to complete later.
Although you will not get personal benefit from taking part in this research study, your responses may help us understand more about the needs and preferences of how we can best include wearable devices into your clinical care.
We hope to receive completed surveys from about 300 people, so your answers are important to us. Of course, you have a choice about whether to complete the survey, but if you do participate, you are free to skip any questions or discontinue at any time. Your participation is completely voluntary, and you can choose to withdraw from the study at any time. If you do choose to withdraw from participation, any data collected up to that point will be used. Additionally, if the survey is not completed, we will send three reminder emails to complete the survey.
If you participate, you will have the option to be entered into a drawing for one of four $50 gift cards.
There is minimal risk with your participation in this study. There is a potential risk of loss of confidentiality. To reduce this risk, all your answers will be linked with an assigned study ID. Your response to the survey will be kept confidential to the extent allowed by law. When we write about the study you will not be identified, and your name will not be used in presentations or publications.
If you have questions about the study, please feel free to ask; my contact information is given below. If you have questions about your rights as a research participant or want to report any problems or complaints, you can call the Medical College of Wisconsin/Froedtert Hospital Research Subject Advocate at (414) 955-8844.
